Test Drive Unlimited (2006)

Released in 2006 (for Xbox 360, followed by a PC version in 2007), Test Drive Unlimited (TDU) fundamentally changed our perception of racing games. While the competition took place on closed tracks or dark city streets, TDU transported us to the sun-drenched island of Oahu (Hawaii) and gave us a sense of freedom.

The pioneer of car lifestyle simulators

1. The World: Oahu at a 1:1 scale

The game’s most important feature is the island of Hawaii, modeled based on satellite data. Over 1,600 kilometers of paved and dirt roads were available. This was the first game where we could truly experience the thrill of “cruising”: setting off from one side of the island and simply driving along the coast for an hour.

2. Cars, Bikes and Brands (The Key to Authenticity)

TDU didn’t just provide “cars and bikes” but it offered an exclusive lineup. The licensed roster was impressive:

  •    Brands: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Pagani, Saleen, Kawasaki and so many others.
  •    Detail: Every car’s interior (cockpit) was fully rendered, complete with working gauges and roll-down windows - which was revolutionary in 2006.
  •    Purchasing experience: You didn’t buy a car or a bike from a menu instead, you had to visit dealerships, where you walked around the displayed models and selected the wheel rims and interior upholstery color.

3. "Lifestyle" Elements

The game went beyond just racing:

  •    Real Estate: You could buy luxury villas and apartments to house your growing car collection.
  •    Character Customization: You could buy your own clothes from brands like Ecko Unltd. or Marc Ecko.

Best Add-ons and "Must-Have" Tips

The official TDU Megapack was released for PC, adding 45 new cars and a motorcycle to the game. It introduced icons such as the Ferrari F40, the McLaren F1 GTR, and the Lamborghini Diablo. Today, this pack is an essential part of the core experience.

The 45 cars and one motorbike included in the pack range from American muscle to Italian grace with some of the most desirable vehicles on the planet rendered in painstaking detail. After installing the pack, all cars can be bought as normal from the relevant in-game dealerships.

Since Atari shut down the official servers, the community stepped in. While the legendary Project Paradise Remastered mod brought multiplayer back to life for TDU 1, today projects like TDU World carry the torch, ensuring that the global multiplayer infrastructure, clubs, and cruising lobbies remain fully functional.
