The reasons why Linux is better than Windows

  • More secure

A lot of malicious software is created on Windows systems on a daily basis, which fortunately usually does not harm Linux systems. And since most programs are downloaded through the Official Repositories by default, you are also protected against software from untrusted sources like websites advertising various downloads. It protects not only against viruses, but also against spyware (telemetry).

  • Free

In most cases, Microsoft charges you money to legally use a version of Windows on your computer. By contrast, most Linux systems - and most of the software packages available for them - are completely free and open source. "Free" doesn't just mean money ("free as in beer"), but also freedom ("free as in speech"), that is, access to the source code.

  • Runs faster even on older computers

In many cases, a Windows computer may be slower than a Linux computer at performing the same activities. In such cases, most people solve the problem by upgrading the computer’s components or replacing the entire computer, unnecessarily. It’s also worth mentioning the existence of “low-resource desktop environments” (such as XFCE or LXQt), which can breathe new life into even 10- to 15-year-old computers.

  • Fits comfortably on smaller disk spaces

Regardless of the fact that a basic Windows 10/11 system takes up a relatively large amount of disk space compared to a Linux system, there are hardly any applications or services that come with it out of the box to justify this. Windows 11 takes up even more space and comes pre-installed with even more unnecessary features (bloatware).

  • Protection of personal data

On Windows 10 you can already see during installation how much of your personal data Microsoft is trying to get by default. This issue has become even more critical with Windows 11 due to the mandatory Microsoft account, integrated online search telemetry, and the introduction of controversial AI-powered features like Windows Recall, which periodically takes screenshots of your entire desktop activity. Linux distributions respect your digital boundaries and do not spy on your daily workflow.

  • Reliable, stable operation

Linux systems generally guarantee much more stable and reliable operation. You’ve probably come across cases where you’ve had to clean up applications that have frozen and stuck in memory in the Windows task manager. On Linux, even if a graphical program crashes, the underlying core system (the kernel) almost never goes down. In fact, if the graphical interface itself hitches, you can usually restart just the display server or switch to a TTY terminal to kill the rogue process, completely avoiding the need for a forced hardware reboot.
